Quilter to Quilter
Yesterday's News in Scraps

Sharon says:

"I've been teaching quilting classes for four years. This past fall I had students gather up scraps (big and small) and bring them to class. They made quilts called 'Yesterday's News' using old newspapers as a foundation ('seasoned' so that the print no longer rubbed off).

"Large quilt blocks were made from a half-sheet of newspaper by starting in the center and adding additional pieces (right side to right side -- flip down and continue working around the newspaper sheet to the outer edges). They then sewed these large blocks together to make a larger quilt (lap-size to king-size).

"It took some of the gals a little time to work the pieces so they had no holes, but they were all very satisfied with their project. A person can use one color family, a theme such as Christmas, or all scrap fabrics where anything goes!"

Sandra L. Hatch, editor says:

I don't know how to "season" newspaper to prevent ruboff; I did not find any hints when searching for this online either. I know others will want to know how to prevent newspaper smears and ruboffs, so please let's hear some hints from you readers about how to do this.

I sometimes use newspapers to wrap gifts, and it would be nice if the ink did not rub off when wrapping. I especially like to use the colored comics section for wrapping.

Thanks to all of you who answered this question. I laughed about the butlers ironing newspapers for their employers so they wouldn't get ink on their hands. Of course, we all have someone to do this for us, don't we?

Jacquelyn has an answer:

"In answer to Sharon's question of how to season newspapers -- you can iron them on both sides with a moderately hot iron. It sounds silly, but it works. I heard this from an English butler who did this for his employer so the employer would not get ink on his hands."

Joan wrote about the same topic:

"I read a while ago that if you iron the newspaper page on both sides it sets the ink; it then does not rub off on your hands. Apparently the butlers of the wealthy have been doing this for years -- no inky hands for the captains of industry! Hope this helps, and I LOVE your newsletter."

Sharon, the original source of the term "seasoned newspapers" writes:

"A question was raised about how to season newspaper. Simply stack your newspapers and let them age for about three weeks -- the newsprint will no longer rub off on your fabrics when using the newspaper as a foundation for a scrap quilt."
