From Our Readers
I have never before written to anyone, at any magazine, but I just wanted to thank you for the article in this new issue on sergers. I just turned 65 this month, have sewn since I was about 8 or 9 years old, and have made everything from regular garments, formal wear and wedding dresses, and costumes, to my latest passion, quilts, of which I have made many styles, from table toppers to king-size bed quilts and have even recently tried art quilts. I currently own three incredible sewing machines, one of which is a Bernina embroidery/sewing combination machine. However, I have never owned or used a serger, even back when they were so popular with home seamstresses in the 70's when we sewed on the knit fabrics that were used so much.
I have often been curious, but have never asked EXACTLY what they did, not even when seeing them in my favorite fabric and quilt shops! Thanks to your article, I now have a much better idea of what they do, how they work, and find myself planning to look at them in the near future with the consideration of purchasing one for myself. I so appreciate the fact that your magazine put an article in it that really does fit into the "Back to Basics" category, and helped me learn something that I have so often wondered about - I had no idea that they could be used for anything other than knit fabrics.
Keep up the good work!
I also found the article about Jan Wantz, and her paper towel quilts, very interesting; how very creative, innovative and beautiful! Kudos to her for recognizing and exploring some of the creative possibilities that others of us would never even consider.
